....do some writers posting fics ignore the most importatnt rule.

Beverly's eyes are BLUE!

Not green. Not brown. Not hazel. Not purple. Not black. But BLUE!

Two short entries on ffnet have her having green eyes. This REALLY annoys me!

That bugs me too!  I've also read that her hair is golden brown.

I've read both hazel and grey for his eyes and that's never bothered me.  They are close together and hard to really tell the difference sometimes.  I was confused as to why my son's eyes were grey, then the doctor said, no, they're hazel (which I'm still confused about).

Well, canonically speaking, Beverly has had green eyes – at least once.

In Sub Rosa at Nana’s house, Deanna sees a picture of Beverly and her grandmother and comments on Nana’s “remarkable” green eyes.  Beverly responds that all the Howard women had green eyes, "except for my mother and me."

Then we have that scene with Picard beaming down to the planet, knocking at the door and looking through the window to see Beverly flagranto de licto, reclined in the chair with her eyes appearing to have taken on a green shade.

Jean-Luc eventually pulls himself together, knocks again but not waiting for an answer, steps over the threshold and calls out to Beverly and after some argy-bargy about not one but two Howard women being swept away and jealousy not becoming him, he notices Beverly’s green eyes and says that he preferred them the way they were before, before concluding: "I preferred you the way you were before, Beverly!"

Here’s the transcript (via http://www.chakoteya.net/NextGen/266.htm):

CRUSHER: I'm so glad you're here. I can't imagine what life was like before I met you.
RONIN: And it will only get better.
(he turns into a green mist and enters her body)
CRUSHER: Oh, Ronin. I had no idea I could feel this way.
RONIN [OC]: We're nearly merged now. As two candles join to form a single light, so we will flourish as one.
(a knock at the door)
RONIN [OC]: I love you, Beverly.
CRUSHER: I love you.
(another knock, then Picard enters)
PICARD: Beverly?
CRUSHER: Jean-Luc.
PICARD: Sorry I startled you. I knocked but there was no answer. The door was open. I hope you don't mind.
CRUSHER: What do you want?
PICARD: Well, I'd hoped to meet your new friend, Ronin.
CRUSHER: He's not here.
PICARD: Well, perhaps I could wait, if you don't mind. I'm really anxious to meet this remarkable young man who swept away not just one, but two of the Howard women.
CRUSHER: (carrying the candle) Jealousy doesn't suit you, Jean-Luc.
PICARD: Have you changed the colour of your eyes?
CRUSHER: I just grew tired of the other colour. Don't you think it suits me?
PICARD: I think that I preferred your eyes the way they were before. I think I preferred you the way you were before, Beverly.

 Grin

I tend to agree with Deanna. Unless I'm reading a fic where Beverly is "connected" to Ronin (and I seriously hope never to encounter such a fic, or if I do, I want to have my eyeballs rinsed with bleach), I don't want to read that she has green eyes.

*shudder*

Please, make the memories of Ronin go away! Please!

A bit OT, but despite the episode this is my favourite P/C exchange.  In my mind I've always believed that he didn't go down because it just didn't seem right but because he was actually jealous and wanted to fight for his woman.  He just happened to have a good excuse to do it.  And I love the fact that he didn't just brush off her eye colour or seem indifferent about it.  In the situation they were in her eye colour is really trivial.  In the 24th century I'm sure there are easier ways to change your eye colour than contacts so it really shouldn't have mattered.  He was supposedly there to find out about her mysterious friend that had her acting strangely.  The fact that he not only noticed but called her on it, to me, showed how much he loves her just the way she is and is bothered by anything that changes that, even if it is just eye colour.  It could just be my helpless romantic side desperately looking for something there.

I never considered Ronin an actual "love interest" for Beverly.  The only reason she fell in "love" with him was because he possessed her and made her feel that way.  Had she been allowed to be herself and make her own choices without his influence I do not believe she would have really liked him.  And he wasn't too successful in making her love him since she was still able to kill him  Grin. That's my take and I'm sticking to it.

Agreed, Deanna. However, I still try to make a point of watching both "Sub Rosa" and "Genesis" if I have time on each Oct. 31st. Both still scare me after all these years. I also think "Sub Rosa" is full of constant expressions of many levels of Picard's love for best friend Beverly.

I completely agree. Hell, the first time they meet and he merges with her, he drugs her and then ignores her when she yells at him to stop. IMO, not romantic. Upsetting and horrible.

I agree Araniell that scene was very unsettling.  I think the closest to dealing with rape in the 24th century.

I think many of us don't like Ronon, myself included. He's possessive and controlling. His effect on Beverly is like that of an additive drug and he takes her away from friends and family. He seems like an abusive personality to me.

To answer your question, no I do not care for Ronin (nor do I think he has a sexy voice - that award always has, and always will belong to Jean-Luc Picard in my books).

I find the whole concept of Ronin to be despicable, nauseating, and downright vile. I don't care how pretty/sexy/alien/mysterious/whacko/famous/powerful the person is, NO means NO. What he did was tantamount to rape.

Perhaps my brain is foggy, but I am unclear about what you meant with this statement. Would you mind clarifying it for me? Thanks.

No. Never. And don't forget that underneath all that body was actually a lizard!  Cheesy (reference to V : The Series original one. Duncan Reghear played Charles - the lizard lover of the evil Diana) Come to think of it, it didn't end well for him then either!

I found that "merge" scene disturbing too...just as I found it disturbing that Troi was always being psychicly mind-raped by some telepathic alien...it was a cliche plot device and made it seem as though the female characters were weak. In Beverly's case, I like the point made about how Ronin's hold on her was not strong enough to keep her from protecting her captain and allowed her to kill him at the end. We all knew that Picard went down there mostly because of his feelings for Beverly and the writers knew too. They captitalized on the P/C relationship when it suited them and threw it out the window whenever it became inconvenient. As much as I love Trek, this really burned me because when other characters would come into their lives, I felt as if I was being cheated on! lol...I nearlywalked out o the theater with the Anij thing on Baku. It just never made sense to me and I am glad that the books changed that. I'm also glad to have found this site because I enjoy seeing how people would have changed things given the chance (some more respectful of continuity and characterization than others). Let's face it...if the characters didn't mean something to us thanks to the superb acting/chemistry of the two actors, we wouldn't be discussing it right now. That relationship just developed a life of it's own and spawned entire universes of alternate lives for them. I truly feel that not Ronin, or Odan, or Anij or Nella or even Starfleet should have come between them and hope that in the books, they don't ignore the fact that Picard's vision of the future in "All things" did not come true for Deanna or Data, so a divorce should not be in the future for him and Beverly. Sorry to blabber on...I've been weaning myself off of coffee and I am truly an old, passionate  romantic at heart. If I wanted to see reality, I would watch TV (or the rubbish that tries to pass for TV nowadays). I want to see happy endings. They've paid their dues to king and country.
